Candombl Religion Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Candombl Religion - Research Paper Example The religion is founded on the soul of Nature, but also displays elements of African mythology and culture. The popularity of Candomblà © is due to the combination of many religions into one, making it agreeable to a variety of potential followers and one of the most sough-out religions in Africa and Europe. When a religion is considered to be syncretistic, it means that it is a combination of two or more religions or cultures, pulling beliefs, stories, and, oftentimes, deities from other religions. Candomblà © is a combination of three main African religions, Yoruba, Fon, and Bantu. Muslim traditions have also been incorporated, though these were more common during the slave trade in Brazil. The only Muslim tradition that is still observed in Candomblà © is believing, and thus practicing, the use of Friday as the only day worthy of worshipping deities, praying, and meditating. Many local Native American deities were also used in rituals, though this practice did not last long due to the Catholic Church looking down upon such practices, thus not allowing their slaves to implement them into their practices. Catholicism is yet another religion whose beliefs and practices have been adopted by the Candomblà © religion. This was due to the fact that ââ¬Å"many Christian slave owners and Church leaders felt it was important to convert the enslaved Africans. This was in order to fulfill their religious obligations [...] (ââ¬Å"History of Candomble).â⬠A connection was found between the worshipping of saints in Catholicism and the worshipping of ancestor deities in Candomble, so the Candomble practitioners secretly combined their deities with the saints of Catholicism. Deities and Beliefs Candomble is a polytheistic religion, recognizing and worshipping more than one god. They believe in an all-powerful God, Oludumare, and the lesser deities that serve him. These lesser deities are known as orixas, voduns, and inkices. Orixas are ancestors that, upon death, become viewed and treated as gods. They each represent a specific force in nature and a certain food, animal, or color. Voduns and inkices are spirit gods, similar to orixas; the three lesser deities share the duty of acting as a connection between the spiritual world and the human world, passing along messages or searching for cures to illnesses. The greatest difference between orixas and voduns and inkices is that it is believed that every human being has their own orixa, whose duty it is to control the destiny of that person, as well as to protect them (Voeks 57). It is also a belief of Candomble practitioners that a personââ¬â¢s personality and defining characteristics are dependent on that personââ¬â¢s orixa. Candomble maintains a belief similar to that of karma, which is more common in Buddhism and Hinduism. Karma is the belief that a personââ¬â¢s actions in the present will influence or have an effect on their lives in the future or in another life. Candomble holds t hat there are no concepts of good and evil. Each person has the task of fulfilling their destiny in whatever way they need to, regardless of what that destiny is. However, if a person succumbs to evil to fulfill their destiny, their actions will come back to them, essentially returning their evil. This belief prevents people from doing anything that they want, allowing them to understand that their are consequences to their actions. The Candomble have a variety of moral codes that they most follow, though these tend to change from generation to generation. It is the job of the Baba Egum to regulate and update the moral responsibilities of their people. The Baba Egum are in charge of making sure that the essential moral codes

An evaluation of the agricultural green revolution Essay
An evaluation of the agricultural green revolution - Essay Example Green revolution has been a blessing until recent years when the negative impact of these technologies has emerged. This paper discusses the concept of green revolution, its benefits and risks of this technology. Food security has been an issue of concern in many of the developing countries. In fact it can be said that the problems related to food security have been a major cause of concern to mankind. In the past the food needs of growing populations were met especially by expanding the cultivated area. There were farming communities that cultivated in a particular place for few years and then later abandon the land for several years. However, as the most fertile land became scarce, researchers and agriculturists found that expansion of agricultural land for increasing production was not a good option for the future years. Further expansion meant bringing poorer and lower yielding land into cultivation. Hence it was found in 1960s that the present levels of production cannot sustain the population and maintaining food production per capita was a challenging task (Evenson, N.D). The Green Revolution came as a boon to mankind and was a major turning point in agriculture. It helped to increase the food production predominantly by getting better strains of wheat, rice, maize and other cereals in the 1960s. The revolution as such began in 1945 when the Rockefeller Foundation and the Mexican government established the Cooperative Wheat Research and Production Program to improve the agricultural output. Dr Norman Borlaug is the father of green revolution and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for developing this technology (Parks, N.D.). Green revolution is the breeding of new plant varieties and the application of modern agricultural techniques such as use of chemical fertilizers, irrigation, use of heavy machinery and control of pests and diseases using synthetic pesticides. Probably without the use of Green Revolution technologies the basic food requirements of the world's current population would not have been possible. This technology is responsible for saving almost a billion human lives from starvation (Easterbrook, 1997). Green revolution technologies along with its gains also brought about several economic and ecological problems. Food security being one of the most important issues concerning mankind, the further increase in food production should be addressed with caution in the coming years. Benefits of Green Revolution The adoption of HYVs occurred quickly because farmers and researchers found a good yield from these varieties when compared to the traditional varieties. By 1970, about 20 percent of the wheat area and 30 percent of the rice area in developing countries were planted with the HYVs, and by 1990, the share had increased to about 70 percent for both crops which produced good yield. In fact it can be said that the basic yields of rice and wheat almost doubled. For instance, Mexico a country that adopted green revolution went from having to import half its wheat to self-sufficiency by 1956 and, by 1964, to exporting half a million tons of

Hockey .vs. football Essay Example for Free
Hockey .vs. football Essay Football and hockey are two sports, which are similar in objective, but very different in their rules and guidelines. In each of these major sports there are rules and guidelines that the players must follow. The topics that will be covered are the weight differences between the players in football and hockey, the use of Creatine Monohydrate, and last the equipment restrictions. This first paragraph will discuss the weight difference between the players in the NFL (football) and the NHL (hockey). Although there is no written rule as to how much a player can weigh in either of the sports, there is the unwritten rule that the players and coaches follow. The average hockey player weighs about 185 pounds. The average weight of a full NHL hockey team consisting of 24 players is about 4,500 lbs. Coaches in the NHL do not want their players too weigh more than 200 though because as Mike Milbury the coach of the New York Islanders put it when a player is as big as a football player (approx. 250 lbs. ). It is harder for a player to move quickly and elude an upcoming check. In the NFL, it is the opposite of the NHL. The coaches dont want their players too weigh less than 200 pounds. The Punter/Kicker is the only position that it doesnt really matter what the weight of player is. On average the weight of a NFL player is 250 lbs. The average team consisting of 48 players weighs about 12,000 lbs. This paragraph talks about a very controversial substance that is used by millions of people around the world. This wonder drug, which is not really a drug, but a natural occurring substance in the human body is called Creatine Monohydrate. This substance was used in the NFL until 2 years ago when the governing board of the NFL ruled that Creatine is a steroid type substance that gives the athlete using it a substantial edge in quickness, strength, and endurance over the players who choose not to use it. If a player is caught using the substance he will be suspended for the same amount of time, as he would be if he were using the real anabolic steroids. Yet the NHLs board of governors has not even voted upon this same substance. It is a proven fact that the NHL players using Creatine have gained on average 15 ? 20 pounds of muscle in as little as 2. 5 months. The players have also been injured less when using the substance. This last paragraph will talk about the equipment restrictions between the NHL and the NFL. Hockey has a lot of restrictions that the players must follow. Each piece of equipment worn has a size restriction on it. Goalies are watched more carefully than the players are because last year in the NHL the goals a game average went from 7. 5 to 5. The NHL did an investigation and found out that some goalie equipment was almost twice as big as it was when they last did an investigation in the early 90s. If a player is caught breaking the rules on equipment size, he will receive a 2-minute penalty. If the player is a repeat offender he can receive (fourth infraction) a 1 game suspension. The NFL does not have any equipment restrictions as of right now. The reason for this is because the offensive/ defensive line players (310+ lbs. ) keep getting bigger, making the equipment rule a waste of time. There are some teams that are taking advantage of this though. Since there is no advantage to players in the NFL wearing bigger equipment, there is an advantage in adding substances to the equipment and the player. Players are using pine tar on their hands so that it makes it almost impossible for a player to drop the ball if the throw is half-decent. The players are also using a silicone-based substance on their game jersey so that it is hard for the opposing team to grab them and pull them down. Although the objective to both these pastimes are similar players must follow different rules in their sport. It may seem unfair for one pro league to let their players use something that is banned in another pro sport. The board of governors have to take all this into consideration and decide what is best for their sports and obviously they wont be able to make all the right decisions. With so many new products that will help to enhance players performance that eventually they will all be banned from pro sports.

The Decline of Family in Modern Britain Essay -- Sociology, Family Val
The Decline of Family in Modern Britain Family- ââ¬Å"a group of people who are related to each other such as a mother, a father and their children ââ¬Å"(Cambridge Dictionaries Online, Cambridge University Press (2008)), Is this the view of a family in 2008, clearly it could be said that this definition is somewhat outdated but does it point to the family being in decline? In Britain today the family has certainly undergone a lot of changes compared to the 1950s where the family was predominately a nuclear family where the man of the household went out to work and the woman stayed at home to cook, clean and look after the children. Today there are a number of ââ¬Ënewââ¬â¢ structures to a family such as single parent families, reconstituted families and same sex families all of which consider they to be what constitutes a family. But how did these ââ¬Ënewââ¬â¢ structures come about, to answer this we have to look at the changes the family has undergone in recent years. Divorce is a big influence on the structure of a family as it is today. Divorce is easier to obtain than in previous years with the introduction in 1971 of the Divorce Reform Act that established irretrievable breakdown of marriage as grounds for divorce. Another act was passed in 1984 that allowed married couples to divorce after one year of marriage that ultimately increased the number of divorces. Legal aid is now more accessible and ends in most cases the expense of a divorce. Divorce is also far less stigmatised than previously where the likelihood of knowing someone who is divorced as opposed to not knowing anyone (as in previous years) is rare and on the whole accepte... ...ly has its own structure dependant on who you are and as long as it functions to the best of its ability, it is about change ââ¬Ëwith the timesââ¬â¢ rather than decline. Social Inequality Essay -- Sociology
Social inequality is a topic that has been debated for 1000ââ¬â¢s of years, and remains a very fluid topic today. Itââ¬â¢s fair to assume that there isnââ¬â¢t a defining reason as to why certain societies have progressed faster than others, as we can inly give theory as to why we see advanced, industrialized states; while other societies have failed to establish the technology often assumed with modernized nations. Jared Diamond, professor of geography and physiology at the University of California, Los Angeles has dedicated much of his adult life researching why social inequality exists. What Diamond has theorized, through his extensive study of hunter and gatherer societies of tribal Papua New Guinea, and his subsequent study of ancient Eurasian societies, was the environment which bound these cultures was the sole reason as to whether or not they advanced to a modern state. Opponents to Diamondââ¬â¢s theory have proposed differing theories, ranging from the societies r eligious beliefs, to whether or not the society practiced an egalitarian way of living, all of which can be debated as to justifiable causes of social inequality. Others believe Diamondââ¬â¢s theory is to obscure, citing that the ability of a society to adapt and make use of its natural environment is an over simplistic explanation to an issue for which there isnââ¬â¢t a definitive answer. So the question remains, why have certain societies progressed faster than others? Agreeing with Diamondââ¬â¢s theory, I believe the answer lies solely in the ability of a given society to farm, and of equal importance the type of farming each cultureââ¬â¢s environment provides them. Nutritional resources are of great importance in Diamondââ¬â¢s theory as to why certain societies progressed more rapidly than oth... ...ffort or innovation, the environment that surrounds your culture, and many other societies still experiencing social inequality, is not suitable for proper expansion. The Mexican & American Economy
Growth has slowed considerably in early 2001 in response to the hard downturn in the US economy. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in 2001 is forecast to slow to 2%, from 6.9% in 2000. A rebound of growth in 2002 will depend on an upturn in the U.S. economy and continued conventional economic management. A tightening of monetary policy should enable inflation to fall to under 7% by the end of 2001. With hopes in 2002 of a further reduction in inflation, provided the peso depreciates gradually. The first year of the Fox administration, combined both the fiscal and monetary tightening that will characterize the administration, this will limit GDP growth to only 2% in 2001. A pick-up in growth to 4.5% can be forecast for 2002 as private consumption and export-oriented industrial output rebound with the beginning of a turnaround in the US economy. A sharper slowdown than currently forecast is possible if the US economy goes into recession. A slowing domestic economy, combined with tight monetary and fiscal policy, will ensure that inflation continues to fall in 2001-02, although not as quickly as officials have targeted. With inflation already at single-digit levels and the peso likely to depreciate during the next year, further large reductions in inflation will be difficult to achieve. To reach its inflation target of 6.5% for 2001, Banxico will have to tighten monetary policy again following several tightening moves over the past 12 months. Even considering a relatively tight fiscal deficit target ceiling of 0.6% of GDP, year-end inflation will probably be around 7.5% in 2001 and about 5% in 2002. Positive investor sentiment towards Mexico, fuelled by expectations of an investment upgrade, has resulted in a strengthening of the peso in 2001. However, with the trade deficit widening on the back of the US slowdown and a possible cooling of sentiment towards Mexico, the peso seems bound for depreciation against the US dollar of more than 10% in total during 2001-02. The depreciation would be more severe except for rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve (the US central bank), which began in January and are likely to continue during the year in reaction to a slowing US economy. Both exports and imports will grow at a much slower rate in 2001-02 than in the previous two years, reflecting a slowdown in the US economy as well as in domestic demand. Mexican exporters are facing an unfavorable environment for their products for the first time since the beginning of NAFTA in 1994. In 2000 growth in the import bill outstripped export earnings growth, a trend that will continue into the next year. Were the peso to depreciate more suddenly than currently forecast, export earnings growth could trend higher than import growth, resulting in a downward revision of the forecast for the current-account deficit. If the peso depreciates as expected, the current-account deficit will widen in 2001 and will further expand in 2002.
